Burial plots are pieces of land that you purchase from a cemetery for the purpose of burying a loved one's body or ashes. Purchasing a plot is not always necessary, especially if you have chosen to cremate the body and scatter the ashes at some desired location.
Understand that not all plots are similar and can vary greatly in pricing. Location, location, location is key is as well as in real estate purchasing. Some cemeteries may have a nicer plot of land or located within a desirable city metropolis itself. These are factors that can cause the price of the plot to be higher than average.
Also some burial plots require a monthly or annual maintenance fee or landscape fee, so make sure you are aware of any additional charges in addition to the actual piece of earth you are getting. There may also be a digging fee and covering fee to dig up the dirt and burial area and then place the dirt back on top of it.
These are items that may not be incurred at all cemeteries so just make sure you are well aware that they may exist. Most of us do not purchase burial plots very often so we may not know what questions to ask or what to look for. If your unsure, ask them to provide you a list of their terms or inclusions so you have it in writing. Often you will also get a contract to sign once you have finalized the purchase but its good to see it all before you buy.
